BALSA SHEET EDGE TOOL
This tool is used to true the edge of balsa sheets of almost any thickness. Measurements: 5-7/16" long, 1-5/8" wide,1" high. A small aluminum plate holds down the number 11 Exacto blade. |
|
Edge Tool (bottom view) - The tool shown is made of oak. Poplar, maple or other hardwoods would be good substitutes. The 2 pins that position the Exacto blade are piano wire. The bolt remains tight. Simply loosen the thumbscrew to change the blade.

Close up - The purpose of this tool is to create perfectly straight edges on a sheet of balsa so that they may be edge glued when making wing skins. Most balsa will warp from moisture changes and a perfectly true edge is a necessity before you glue the sheets together.

To use the tool, place a quality straightedge on top of the balsa sheet. Then place the tool on the straightedge making sure that there is some balsa on the near side of the Exacto blade for the entire length of the sheet. You then slide the tool along the straightedge while holding it tight. The blade can be slid up or down to accommodate different sheet thicknesses. Bernie will give a demonstration of the Edger at the January meeting.
Credit for the invention goes to former Club Member, Steve Castranova.
