RC HELICOPTER TRAINING

The purpose of the Training Procedure is to set forth guide lines for training of new RC Helicopter Pilots.

1 - Before a new helicopter is flown it is to be checked out by a competent helicopter builder/flier for correct set-up and air worthiness.

2 - The new helicopter will be test flown by a competent helicopter builder/flier to insure the radio and heli controls are set-up properly.

3 - Basic instructions will be given to the new/student flier on how to Hover the helicopter safely.  The instructor will stand by the student and give coaching tips until the student has a basic idea as to what is expected of the student and what to do in case the heli goes out of the expected hovering position.

4 - Once the instructor feels that the student understands what is expected he will tell the student to practice only the hovering maneuvers until the student feels comfortable with hovering.

5 - The next step will be flying side to side, stopping in a hover at the left, center and right positions. The instructor will show the student how to perform these maneuvers safely.

6 – When all of the above can be accomplished the instructor will show the student how to fly the helicopter back and forth safely in front of themselves. The student will practice flying this pattern until he is comfortable with all angles or views of the helicopter.

7 - The next step is to show the student how to fly a box circuit over the field. The student will practice this maneuver until proficient.

8 - Final instruction, the student will be shown how to fly figure eights around the field.

The instructor does not have to be present with the student after the student has been instructed on how to perform any of the maneuvers listed above. When ready the student will ask the instructor to teach the next phase of flight.

9 – Signing off new Helicopter pilots:  When the student is proficient with all of the above mentioned maneuvers he must demonstrate to a Helicopter Instructor his abilities to fly the helicopter safely.  If the Instructor feels that the student meets the standards set forth in the above mentioned guidelines the student will be signed off for Helicopter Solo Flying.
